Sleeping Lab·Tang Homestay Project in Tangdazhuang Village, Beijing

The project preserves the original structural framework while enhancing both functionality and aesthetics through refined spatial reorganization and meticulous detailing.

The Sleeping Lab·Tang homestay project, located in Tangdazhuang Village, Beijing, was transformed from an abandoned building by the Atelier d’More design team into a tranquil space that blends modern aesthetics with rural character. Adjacent to Universal Studios, the project preserves the original structural framework while enhancing both functionality and aesthetics through refined spatial reorganization and meticulous detailing.

Guided by the principle of “less is more,” the design team implemented three key transformations:

1.Redesigned Entrance Facade:

A curved canopy was added to unify the previously chaotic roofline, improving drainage while creating a sculptural sense of visual fluidity.

2.Optimized Courtyard Layout:

The original two-courtyard structure was reimagined—the front courtyard features a symmetrical, minimalist white composition, while the rear courtyard emphasizes privacy with floor-to-ceiling glass that plays with light and shadow, naturally transitioning from public to private spaces.

3.Loft Conversion:

The pitched-roof area’s steel structure was repurposed into a family loft, preserving traces of the original framework while optimizing storage and circulation.

Materials combine artisanal craftsmanship with digital prefabrication, with walls, drainage outlets, windows, and furniture collaboratively crafted by designers and local artisans. By day, white courtyard walls diffuse soft light indoors; by night, the arched entrance glows warmly at the street corner, creating an ever-changing atmospheric experience.

This adaptive reuse project demonstrates how minimal intervention can yield maximum value, revitalizing neglected spaces into design-forward yet contextually rooted retreats that enrich village life.
