The 2022 Drone Photo Awards Captures Earth’s Most Alluring Sights from Above

The annual Drone Photo Awards announced its 2022 winners earlier this month, releasing a remarkable collection of images that frame the world’s most alluring landscapes from a rarely-seen view.

At the end of the gray whale season, I was told about a gray whale that, for the last 3 years, used to play with the boats, pushing them gently. So we went back the year after and incredibly the gray whale appeared and this shot is the result.

Compared with “Gray Whale Plays Pushing Tourists” by Joseph Cheires in 2021, “Love Heart of Nature” Captured by Australian photographer Jim Picôt in 2020, the piece is particularly special because a shark swims near the center, chasing one of the fish.

This year’s contest garnered submissions from 2,624 participants hailing from 116 countries, and the aerial photos capture a vast array of life on Earth, including a caravan of camel shadows crossing the Arabian Desert, a waterlily harvest in West Bengal, and the veiny trails of lava emerging from a fissure near Iceland’s Fagradalsfjall volcano.
