Recap: The Immigration-themed Exhibit of Ai Weiwei Reflects The Global Pandemic

Once in 2017, as part of his multi-site exhibition, artist Ai Weiwei installed over 300 artworks for this multi-site, multi-media exhibition across New York.

Now more than 95 countries have imposed quarantine measures from the global pandemic, that make us to look upon migration, immigration and crisis anew. Once in 2017, as part of his multi-site exhibition and with the support of Public Art Fund, artist Ai Weiwei installed over 300 artworks for this multi-site, multi-media exhibition for public spaces, monuments, buildings, transportation sites, and advertising platforms across New York.

Collectively, these elements comprised a passionate response to the global migration crisis and a reflection on the profound social and political impulse to divide people from each other. The exhibition drawed on many aspects of Ai’s career as a visual artist and architect, and was informed by both his own life experience and the plight of displaced people.
